A Seattle shipbuilder sold his company for $3.5 million in 1906 and built an Orcas Island estate

Faced with health challenges in 1905, Seattle shipbuilder Robert Moran moved to the serene Orcas Island, selling his company for $3.5 million. He went on to build Rosario mansion and, in 1921, contributed over 2,700 acres to Washington state, establishing Moran State Park, which has grown into a vital recreational space. Robert Moran passed away in 1943, remembered for his lasting influence on conservation in the region.
