Since independence, the minimum basic pay has risen from a mere ₹55 per month under the First Pay Commission to ₹18,000 under the 7th Pay Commission; the remuneration of government employees has come a long way. Each Pay Commission has brought about changes not only in the employees' earnings but also in their pay structure.
